Boxthorn Removals
Machine for removing boxthorns Machinery

The most important consideration was to find a machine that could extract the boxthorns with minimal disturbance to the natural vegetation.
The days of bulldozers and front-end loaders pushing out boxthorns in coastal sand hills and National Parks are over. Not only do they destroy the surrounding vegetation, but a proportion of the roots are cut off and buried, encouraging re-growth. The boxthorn bush itself is half buried in a pile of sand.
The machines are four wheel drive articulated tractors with very high clearance and fitted with large tyres to minimise damage to the surrounding vegetation.

Machine for removing boxthorns A rotating crane arm is fitted on both machines which enables the extraction of boxthorn bushes in a 180 degree arc. The crane arm is fitted with a grab that clamps to the base of the boxthorn bush and lifts it out of the ground along with the root system.
Any earth that comes out with the roots falls back into the hole leaving very little disturbance. Up to six or seven smaller bushes can be squashed in the grab and then dumped in a tight clump, which will facilitate burning.
The bushes can be piled in large heaps for burning or loaded onto a truck to cart away. Along roadways the bushes can be removed and loaded directly on a truck travelling alongside to save double handling, time and expense.
